We leave early at 6 AM from Rishikesh for an 11-hour drive to Govindghat, covering a distance of 380 km. The drive takes us through picturesque locations like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag, and Joshimath, providing scenic views of the Alaknanda River and the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching Govindghat in the evening, we check into a rest-house for an overnight stay.
Begins with a drive to the starting point of the trek at Govindghat, where we begin the 11 km trek to Ghangaria. The route crosses the Alaknanda River and follows the Bhyundar Valley, passing through lush forests, waterfalls, and small villages. The gradient is moderate, and the trek takes around 4-5 hours. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, hiring a mule is an option. Once we arrive at Ghangaria, we rest for the night at a rest-house.
We begin our trek with a short ascent towards the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The trail is surrounded by breathtaking meadows filled with alpine flowers like Brahma Kamal, Primula, and Geranium. We spend 3-4 hours exploring the valley before continuing our trek to Tipra Kharak, where we set up camp for the night. This 7-8 hour trek covers a distance of 10 km.
Involves a 6-7 hour trek over 6 km, as we move from Tipra Kharak to Bhyundar Icefall Camp. The terrain is more challenging as we navigate through moraine and technical surfaces. While the ascent is gradual, the path can be tough at times, requiring careful footing. Upon reaching the icefall camp, we settle in for a well-deserved rest.
We continue our trek across the Bhyundar Icefall, covering a distance of 5 km in 6-7 hours. This section of the trek is more technical, requiring the use of specialized gear for glacier navigation. Once we complete the glacier section, the path leads to a moraine, which we descend to reach our campsite for the night.
Is a long and demanding day as we start before sunrise to trek from Bhyundar Base to Bhyundar Khal, located at 5,100 meters. The 8 km trek through the glacier is technical, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After reaching the pass, we descend slightly to the Rataban Glacier, where we set up camp for the night, soaking in the panoramic views of the Himalayas.
We begin the descent from the Rataban Glacier to Edi Udiyar, covering a 6 km trek in 7-8 hours. As we trek along the valley, we come across a peaceful and grassy campsite at Edi Udiyar, where we set up camp for the night and rest after a long day’s trek.
We descend further into the village of Ghamsali, a former frontier village now abandoned after the 1962 war with China. The trek takes about 7-8 hours and covers a distance of 10 km. These villages hold a rich cultural heritage, offering a glimpse into the traditions of the region. After reaching Ghamsali, we take a drive to Joshimath for an overnight stay in a guest house.
On the final day of the trek, we leave Joshimath early for the 11-hour drive back to Rishikesh, covering a distance of 364 km. We pass through Dehradun on the way and reach Rishikesh by evening, concluding the unforgettable Valley of Flowers & Bhyundar Pass Expedition.
