Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Sankri, a picturesque village nestled in Uttarakhand, home to about 250 households. Sankri serves as the base camp for several renowned treks like Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun. The village, surrounded by Himalayan vistas, offers mesmerizing views of the majestic Swargarohini peak. The drive winds through charming towns and landscapes including Nainbagh, Naugaon, Purola, Jarmola, Mori, and Naitwari before finally arriving at Sankri after 8 to 10 hours. Sankri features small dhabas and shops, making it an inviting gateway to your trekking adventure.
Begin your trek from Sankri, passing through enchanting pine forests. After an ascent of about 1.5 hours, you’ll cross a small bridge and continue climbing. Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of old dhabas and reach Jainot Thatch within 30 minutes. A brief ascent of 10 minutes brings you to Marikoda, offering sweeping views of Dhunda and the first glimpses of Phulara Ridge. The trek provides a rich Himalayan experience, with snow-capped peaks in view and thrilling ridge walks that showcase the region’s natural splendor.
The day starts with a steady 30-minute ascent through a dense forest, where you’ll encounter fallen trees along the trail. Descend briefly to cross a stream via a wooden bridge, then climb sharply through a short landslide section about 100 meters. The stream is a good spot to refill your water. A 15-minute ascent brings you to Karsu Thatch, a meadow adorned with yellow wildflowers. As the tree line starts to thin, continue ascending gently for another 30 minutes. The trail is dotted with rhododendrons and Bhoj trees, especially vibrant after the monsoon. Soon, lush green meadows unfold, offering a delightful terrain to walk on.
Today’s highlight is the Phulara Ridge. A 45-minute ascent from the campsite leads to the ridge top, often frequented by the colorful Himalayan Monal. You might spot several along the trail. From the ridge, panoramic 250-degree views of snow-clad peaks await. The ridge walk with gentle ascents is breathtaking as towering peaks seem to move along with you. Peaks visible include Hanuman Top, Sarutal Top, DKD, Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, Swargarohini, Hata Peak HKD, Ranglana, Devkyara Valley, Lekha Top, Vijay Top, and Kedarkantha. The trail turns right, passing a series of ascents and descents, with an optional intermittent Vodafone signal at the top. You’ll cross the base of Sarutal before descending towards Pushtara.
The descent begins through rolling meadows scattered with old Gujjar huts. After 30 minutes, the trail converges with a path from Taloti Valley. Continue descending into thick forests filled with yellow flowers carpeting the ground, an inviting spot to relax. As you venture deeper, the forest thickens, dominated by towering pine trees. Stay mindful of the trail as the expansive forest can be disorienting. Fallen logs and curious langurs punctuate the path, making it a lively trek down to Taluka village. From Taluka, drive back to Sankri and rest for the night.
After an early breakfast, depart from Sankri to Dehradun. Enjoy the scenic return drive with opportunities to break for lunch en route. You’ll reach Dehradun by evening, marking the end of a memorable trek.
