The Rupin Pass trek, organized by Mountain Chain Travel Pvt Ltd, is a breathtaking trans-Himalayan journey that stretches from Dehradun in Uttarakhand to Sangla in Himachal Pradesh, offering trekkers a rich blend of diverse landscapes and cultural encounters. The trek begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Dhaula, the starting point nestled amidst verdant forests and river valleys. From Dhaula, the trail winds through charming villages like Sewa and Jakha, known for their traditional wooden houses and warm local hospitality. As trekkers ascend, they pass through lush meadows and pine forests towards BuransKandi, eventually reaching the expansive grasslands of Dhanderas Thach, a perfect site to witness blooming wildflowers. The route intensifies as it climbs to the dramatic Upper Waterfall Camp, perched beside the majestic Rupin Waterfall. The trek's high point is the crossing of Rupin Pass at an elevation of 4,650 meters, offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. Descending on the other side, the trail gently leads to Ronti Gad, a tranquil alpine meadow, and finally culminates in the picturesque village of Sangla, set in the Baspa Valley. Mountain Chain Travel Pvt Ltd ensures a safe, comfortable, and enriching experience by providing expert guides, quality camping gear, and logistical support throughout this exhilarating 8-day trek.
For the Rupin Pass Trek, reach Dehradun early in the morning by 6 am. From there, you’ll board a vehicle heading towards Mori. Mori is a peaceful village surrounded by lush paddy fields and located on the banks of the Tons River. Known for its unique culture and history, Mori is part of the Tons Valley. After a scenic day, retreat to your tents for the night. The next day, your Rupin Pass Trek begins.
Enjoy a beautiful trek through rhododendron woodlands and fields. After hours of walking, you’ll reach Sewa, where you’ll set up camp for the night.
This day offers stunning views perfect for photographers. As you trek through small hamlets, immerse yourself in the local culture. The path takes you through mixed forests, and you’ll catch your first glimpse of the snowy ridges of the Dhauladhar Range. Jakha, the highest hamlet in the region, will be your resting place for the night.
Trek through blue pine and maple forests, with occasional descents to rivers. Cross a small bridge that takes you to the true left of the valley. Spend the night camping beside the river in a shepherd's spot.
Encounter the first snow bridge along the river. A challenging ascent follows, with mesmerizing views of Rupin Valley and the Rupin River. As you progress, you’ll traverse several snow crossings, some of which will be deep enough to reach your knee. Reach your campsite in Dhandras Thach, where you’ll have a great view of the Rupin Waterfall and snow-covered peaks.
This will be a shorter yet tougher trek than previous days, with multiple climbs passing through two waterfalls. As snow begins to melt, the terrain can become quite slippery, especially when hiking from the Lower Waterfall to the Upper Waterfall. Expect a challenging 3 km vertical climb amidst beautiful scenery. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the campsite.
The trek from Upper Waterfall Camp to Rupin Pass offers breathtaking views of hanging glaciers and snowfields. The path to the pass is narrow and steep, and depending on snow conditions, ropes may be used for safety. Once at the pass, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the Kinnaur Kailash Range. From the pass, descend to Ronti Gad, where you can camp among alpine meadows.
Today’s trek is a short and beautiful descent through blue pine, deodar, and oak forests, offering stunning views of the Sangla Valley. After reaching Sangla, a town connected by road to Shimla, the trek ends. You’ll travel from Sangla to Shimla, arriving late in the evening. Be sure to plan your stay in Shimla in advance, as you can either take the Volvo to Delhi or continue on to your next destination.
